Incorrectly Labeled Boxes

Totaly three boxes are there: one with only nuts, one with only bolts, and one with both nuts and bolts. All three boxes are incorrectly labeled(e.g.,the 'nuts' label is on either 'bolts' box or both 'nuts and bolts' box).If only one product(one nut or bolt) is allowed to see from one box, is there a way to find correct labels for all three boxes?

  • Solution: If you see a product from the box labeled "Nuts and Bolts", you know that box contains only that product because all the boxes are incorrectly named and it cannot be the "Nuts and Bolts" box.
  • Suppose you saw a "Nut" from a box labeled "Nuts and Bolts". That box should be the "Nut" box. The box labeled "Bolt" should contain "Nut and Bolt" because it cannot be the "Bolt" box (all boxes are incorrectly labeled) and the "Nut" box has already been found. The remaining box labeled "Nut" should be the "Bolt" box.
